WhatsApp has had Payments as a hidden feature for quite some time. It was just not visible to the users.
WhatsApp has now activated the feature in the background, so now, without updating the app users can enjoy the functionality. This is provided that the users have updated the last & most recent update which came a week back. (Android Version 2.18.46 & iOS Version 2.18.22)
To activate get hold of person who has Payments enabled on his device, once that person tries (only tries – no actual transaction) to send you payment he/she will get error that receiver does not have payment enabled.
Now the receiver just has to close WhatsApp and start again and Voila! you now have WhatsApp payment enabled.
This is for both iOS & Android and Yes! its live for both. The invite functions irrespective of sending or recipient OS. So, iOS can invite android and activate and vice-a-versa.
How to Setup?
There is slight difference in setting up WhatsApp Payments for iOS & Android.
Please note in case your phone number is not associated with bank account whatsapp will throw an error after you select bank from the list of banks available stating you do not have any bank account linked with your mobile.
Android
Step 1: Accept and Continue
Step 2: Verify Phone Number
Step 3: Grant permissions
Step 4: Choose Phone Number in case of Multi Sim Device, Page is skipped if single number
Step 5: Choose Bank Account
Step 6: All associated bank account with the number will be displayed
Step 7: Once bank account is associated the setup is complete
iOS

Once validated the payment is active
How to Send Payments?
Android:
Step 1: Select person whom you wish to send payments, click on the attach icon which reveals the payment option, clicking on payment will ask user to enter the amount to be transferred.
Step 2: Enter UPI PIN created during Setup for authorization
Step 3: Payment transfer goes as message
Step 4: Post successful authorization bank account is auto debited and SMS is received of deduction from respective bank
Step 5: After successful completion and transfer, details can be seen in details on clicking on transaction message
iOS
Step 1: Select person whom you wish to send payments, click on the attach icon which reveals the payment option
