With the social media and blogs keeping the internet bursting at its seams, iPhone 5’s launch has been the most awaited launch ever for any gadget by any company.
The media launch event took place at the Yerba Buena Center in San Francisco where Apple CEO Tim Cook shocked everyone by suddenly taking the wraps of iPhone 5 without much ado, sending the gushing Apple enthusiasts into a tizzy.
The sixth generation of iPhone is sporting iOS 6 which was released as a beta in August. iPhone 5 is everything that a smartphone owner could possibly ever desire for: It is taller, leaner, lighter and packs in much more punch than ever. Apple, which had received a bit of flak on the battery front in the past, seems to have reworked the battery of iPhone 5. It now promises 225 hours of standby time, 8 hours of 3G and 4G LTE browsing, 8 hours of 3G talk time, 10 hours of Wi-Fi browsing, 10 hours of video playback and 40 hours of music play.
Even as there was no word on the battery upgrade from Apple, its performance in the iPhone 5 may have improved, at least statistically.
There seems to be some disappointment in store also for those who were expecting a 12 megapixel camera in iPhone 5. It sports an 8MP rear camera.
Significantly, iPhone 5 will have LTE 4G functionality that will transfer data at much faster rate. The phone will be able to switch between antennae in order to support the network.
It will be interesting to see how the market takes to the LTE-equipped iPhone 5. Rivals Samsung and HTC had threatened Apple a few days ago with patent lawsuits if it ported iPhone 5 with LTE.
Beyond hardware, Apple telegraphed many of the software changes to expect in iPhone 5 when it debuted iOS 6, its latest mobile operating system. Upgrades to the software include voice navigation for driving, a feature already available on many Android smartphones, as well as “Passbook” for storing electronic boarding passes, sports tickets and gift cards.
Siri has been improved. In an onstage demonstration, Siri was able to answer questions about the result of a recent pro football game and recite a list of movies playing around town, along with ratings.
Earlier, Cook told the audience that its apps store now has more than 700,000 on tap — the industry’s largest library.
“When you look at each of these, they are incredible industry-leading innovations by themselves. But what sets them apart, and what places Apple way out in front of the competition, is how they work so well together,” Cook said toward the end of the two-hour presentation.
Given the level of hype around the iPhone 5, it’s almost inevitable that phone itself ends up feeling a little underwhelming when it is launched, but Apple is a past master at ticking the boxes, and giving its growing legion of fans enough to justify an upgrade.
But, in truth, Apple will be well aware that it doesn’t need to reinvent the wheel to succeed and, in this case, it has yet again provided a fine phone that will keep it battling at the top of the charts for another year.
